Ride: Critical Thinker
Sally Ride was the first, and the youngest at the time, American woman in space, and "loved to solve problems". It was not hard to noticed that displays good critical thinking skills. One of the characteristics of a good critical thinker is having effective communication skills. Ride displays being an effect communicator through her double major in English and Physics. She applied these skills when she had to address the United Nations and compose a report for NASA. Later on, Ride's communication skills were used to write several children's books on space exploration. Ride's double major also helps for the research and inquiry skills need for critical thinking because she took into account the importance of communication to achieve her goals. Ride has also used collaborative learning when she helped create NASA's Office of Exploration. These examples, and many more not mentioned, show that Ride was a true critical thinker.

Many of us critical thinkers are improving in recognizing the characteristics of a good critical thinker. I think that acknowledging people's abilities is a good trait because we are able to not only distinguish what is good or bad, but be able to execute them. You showed this through your example. Knowing the Sally Ride has good communication skills will help us get a good idea of what it is and how to practice it. If Sally wrote children's books, what difference would it be in comparison to writing a 5 page analytical paper? If we did not know what it takes to have good communication techniques, it will only be harder for us to learn how to be the best version critical thinker that we are. We need to be aware of our goals before trying to work towards them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you miss summer that Ride definitely utilized her skills and applied it to her goals in life. She was a critical thinker at start in analyzing what she was good at and taking further research into it. With just a bit of time she was able to realize what she was good at and started communicating with others. Like you said communicating helped her become who she is and she used it to get more knowledge. In the end she used the skills of communication to become a critical thinker by analyzing what people say to her.
